Did You Know?

Acrylic can break when falling onto hard surfaces like the bathroom floor or handbasin. That’s why it’s important to always handle them with care. In addition, did you also know:

  • The resin that your denture is made from has microscopic holes that can collect food debris and/or bacteria.

  • Dentures can become contaminated because they are in your mouth on a daily basis and often worn 24 hours a day.

  • Dentures are a possible source of direct extension yeast and bacterial infection to the respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, and directly to the blood stream.

  • 65-80% of denture wearers have Stomatitis, C Albicans, and Candida Glabrata micro-organisms.

Sounds icky, huh? That’s why it’s essential that you follow our instructions about how to correctly clean your denture.

Cleaning Your Dentures

Clean your denture thoroughly twice a day with a denture brush and a non-abrasive cleaner (denture cleaner or ordinary soap). Regular toothpaste is too abrasive for denture care, so make sure you invest in the right products to ensure longevity.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Performing denture corrections at home can worsen the damage. Plus, dental professionals use safe adhesives and other products to prevent the spread of germs and ingestion of nasty chemicals. If you notice any cracks or broken areas do not under any circumstances glue the broken area. Contact us and we will repair it for you.

    • Always remove your denture prior to cleaning

    • Clean your denture over a basin filled with a bit of water so they have a soft surface to land on should you accidentally drop them mid-clean

    • Whiten with hydrogen peroxide or a homemade baking soda paste

    • Always opt for a soft bristle denture brush over a standard tooth brush

    • You can also use vinegar OR some denture bleach on your prosthetics to fight germs. Be sure to rinse them before returning them to your mouth

    • Always brush your gums and teeth before inserting your full or partial denture

    • Keep them in water during periods you won’t be wearing them

    • Always make sure your dentures are dry before returning them to their carry case

    • Remove and rinse your dentures after eating

  • Great question! The answer is yes and no. Maintenance and care routines can depend on the material your dentures are made from. That said, all dentures require regular cleaning to ensure they remain healthy.

When you purchase dentures from us at HDPL, we’ll always provide you with the necessary information needed to care for your prosthetics.

  • Certainly. There are many people who wear full or partial dentures who also play contact sports or have trouble sleeping. Individuals who sleep with their dentures but also suffer from teeth grinding might also benefit from a night guard. Come in and speak to our team about it. Here, we’ll decide if a mouthguard is a suitable option for you.

  • You should clean your denture a least once per day. Doing so will prevent a build up germs and other bacteria, as well as, decrease the chances of discolouration.

  • There are many people who where their dentures all the time. As long as you take a few minutes a day to clean them, this shouldn’t be a problem.

However, wearing your dentures all day every day can irritate your mouth. If this is the case, bring your denture to us and we’ll make necessary adjustments to ensure they remain comfortable during each wear.
